Patric McCarthy was a 10 year old boy on vacation with his father, Stephen and his stepmother Margaret – known as “Max” and her two sons Gabe, age 12 and Noah, age 7.
The family had finished their vacation and were packing up – when their father let the boys go out to play. – with them wandering down to the playground at the neighboring resort “The Village at Loon Mountain”. A short time later the boys returned without Patric.
I spent many years going to the Village at Loon Mountain, and the area is generally safe and I like to think of it that way, but even I feel that there are certainly suspicious elements to the case and some toxic family dynamics. Whether or not you believe Patric’s death was an accident or murder, it’s clear that was true.
First, Patric’s relationship with the other boys seemed to have challenges. Patric’s mother is reported to alluding to sexual comments made by the older boy, Gabe, and has reported that she had asked the father to make certain that Patric was supervised in the boy’s company, which he admittedly did not do on this day. Max did admit, in an article, that Gabe made a reference to oral sex when the younger boys were keeping him awake – I’m not sure what that reference could be or how it was used that makes a lot of sense in that context.
The boy also made a strange confession to assaulting Patric after he was found, pushing him down and sitting on him when questioned which is certainly suspicious thing to say. At more than double his size this could certainly have injured Patric and would explain the odd positioning of his body.
The even-then divorced parents of Patric McCarthy do not seem to agree on much but they both seem to believe that murder was the cause of his death, and both have referenced this assault in further areticles.
Not surprisingly, Max and Stephen divorced soon after. Stephen then married a former babysitter. Max disputes that Gabe has any involvement in the death of Patric. She and her children now reside in Ohio. She feels that Gabe was a scared 12 year old boy who had just lost his stepbrother, and he was unfairly characterized as a bully. For what it’s worth the authorities largely seem to believe that the case is a tragic accident and have listed the cause of death as hypothermia.
Patric’s body was missing his jacket – a brand new hockey jacket that he had received for his birthday, He was also missing a sock and his cap. His body was located 2 miles up the steep Whaleback mountain, face down and arms crossed against his chest. His clothes were wet except for his back. This is also not the typical position for a victim on hypothermia who investigators say are more usually found in a fetal position for warmth.
Authorities in the case have stuck to the theory that Patric merely got lost, and died from exposure. They deny there is evidence to suggest homicide despite several reviews that have occurred due to pressure from Patric’s parents in the years that followed.
Patric was laid to rest at Monument Beach Cemetary in Bourne, Massachusetts.
Ashley Erin Ouelette was born on March 29th, 1983 and at 15 years old and had recently started to put some recent struggles with adolescence behind her. She started a new school at Thornton Academy and her grades were coming up. Her progress was noted by her parents so when she asked on a school night to sleep over friend Alia Page’s house, they said yes. A choice they would live to regret.
It was February 9, 1999 and Ashley’s parents assumed that Alia’s parents would be home, but they weren’t and the teens hosted a small party. The trouble seemed to start when the girls decided to venture out with Ashley wanting to go see Stephen Sanborn, the 18 year old brother of a classmate that was at the party, Daniel Sanborn just after midnight at their white doublewide trailer home on 50 Mast Hill Road. Ashley had a prior relationship with Stephen, but he had moved on with a new girlfriend and he did not return her calls.
Ashley by all reports made it to the Sanborn house where she reportedly said that her parents had thrown her out in order to be able to stay the night.
Around 3:57 am on 4/10/1999, 18 year old Mike Lopes and his mother found Ashley’s body facedown in the road on Pine Point Road in Scarborough, ME. She was deceased but her body was still warm, and she was blue with blood around her mouth. Due to the cold, it was clear that her body had not been there for long. Due to the perfect positioning of her arms by her side, it was clear that she was not hit by a car.
Ashley had been strangled and her neck was reportedly broken. There was evidence of recent sexual activity but it was never alluded to as a sexual assault, not quite sure why – since it’s uncertain how consent could have been ascertained.
Daniel Sanborn was narrowed as the focus of the investigation. There were drops of blood found in the home, and there was evidence of recent sexual activity (a used condom) found in the home as well. Grass matching grass found on the body was found in Danny’s car and his story changed several times, usually when it was proven that he was lying. Still, he has never been charged in this case.
Both Daniel and his brother Stephen have developed long criminal records and have spent time in jail over the years for things like Assault, Drug Trafficking and Theft.
A friend of the boys, Angel “Tony” Torres went missing 3 months after Ashley’s death. According to his parents, it was after indicating that he knew what happened to Ashley. He left a party to head to a convenience store on South Street in Biddeford, ME with a friend named Jay Carney, who returned without him. Carney gave excuses Torres left with another, as yet unknown, friend of his. Carney was also on the short list of the last people who saw Ashley alive. Tony has never been found, and was declared dead in 2004. Jay Carney died of an overdose in 2015 at age 36.
Sadly, Ashley’s father passed away 2001. Her mother and Tony’s family deserve justice in this case. The Ashley’s family is offering a $20,000.00 reward for information leading to a conviction in her case. Angel’s family has offered over $15,000 reward for information that leads to his remains or a conviction. As of last year, new tips were continuing to come in a be developed.
Brianna Alexandra Maitland was born 10/8/1986 to Bruce and Kellie Maitland. Brianna grew up with her brother and her parents farm in East Franklin, VT until she moved in with friends after sophomore year in order to attend Enosburg Falls High. She moved around friend’s houses after her initial plans did not work out – at first couch surfing and living out of her car before moving in with Jillian Stout longtime friend, in February of 2004. About this same time, Brianna quit school to pursue to the GED program.
On the day that she disappeared, 17 year old Brianna took her GED test and then went to lunch and shopping with her mother. In the last store they went to, Brianna went outside after noticing something, and when her mother joined her after cashing out Brianna was obviously agitated and maybe scared, but never spoke to her mother about what was bothering her.
She was dropped off her apartment where she was staying with Stout, between 3:30 pm and 4 pm in order to get ready for her shift at the Black Lantern Inn. She had started this job only about 2 weeks before, as a dishwasher. She made in to work and eventually clocked out at 11:20 pm, declining to hang out with coworkers due to having to work her other job in St Albans the next day where she was a server at a diner. Her 1985 Oldsmobile was found the next day about a mile from work, at an abandoned house, known as the Dutchburn House, where it had been backed into the building – with the siding being breached by the car.
Pictures of this are available on the internet due to passerby’s finding the scene odd. Several people went passed the area and saw the car but no one noticed anyone with the car. Her exboyfriend noted the car headlights were on with the doors open on his way home, he shut the car up and went on his way but there was no sign of Brianna. It was later noted 2 of her paychecks were found on the seat. Outside the car, a broken necklace belonging to Brianna, along with loose change a water bottle and an unsmoked cigarette, DNA was found at the scene.
Her mother was not notified of the car being found or the disappearance for 5 whole days. Brianna was officially reported as missing on 3/25/2004. There was a search agency that the parents got involved that later also reported later finding zip ties, Victoria’s Secret underwear and a syringe in a nearby ditch. It is unknown if these items were related. The police had the car towed but they did not take any pictures or investigate the scene further.
One thing that I saw as weird while researching this case was that Brianna left her roommate a note to say that she was going to be home after work. Why? Wasn’t she always? I found that strange. The roommate went away for the weekend and the note was untouched and there was no sign of Brianna, so she reached out to Brianna’s mother which is what started the search process and let her mother know that she was missing.
Rumors spiraled regarding what happened to Brianna. Friends reported that Brianna had recently taken some hard drugs and there were rumors about Brianna being held against her will at a local residence with two drugs dealers from New York that were known to Brianna, named Ramon Ryans and Nathanial Charles Jackson.
This residence was raided on 4/20/2004 and while a significant amount of drugs were found there was no indication that Brianna was there or had been there. An anonymous letter indicated that Brianna was held at this address for 5 days before being killed and stored at another address before being dismembered and disposed of at a pig farm, but there was never any evidence to back up this story.
Police investigated any links to the serial killer Israel Keyes but have ruled him out as a suspect in this case.
Three weeks prior to her disappearance, Brianna was in a physical altercation where she was attacked by a “friend” named Keallie Lacross where she was hit several times in the face – breaking her nose, causing a concussion and blackening her eyes. This was allegedly over a guy. She later pressed charges but they were dropped after Brianna went missing.
Keallie was later involved in another assault and home invasion in an unrelated incident in 2012 where she assaulted and bit the homeowner. Additionally she was charged with DUI and child endangerment in 2013 after being pulled over with a blood alcohol of 0.156 with her infant child in the car.
No further information has been released in regard to her potential involvement in Brianna’s case but anyone who has witnessed a real girl fight in high school knows how these things can go. They don’t have to make sense, as it’s often violence for the sake of violence, and usually is over a guy as it was here.
In March of 2022, Police received the results of the DNA comparison to 11 of the people looked at in this case to DNA found at her abandoned car and have a match. They have not released who the match is, or their planned next steps but there is hope for some new developments after all these years.
Brianna’s body has never been found but foul play is suspected in this case. This family deserves answers. There was a skull found that the police DNA tested but it was found to belong to another person and is not related to Brianna’s case.
There seem to be a lot of these cases lately – where children were noted to be missing after a significant periods of time. I am not understanding this trend even in the age of Covid. In my experience, these cases don’t have happy endings. I have a bad feeling about this one as well, even if the Manchester, NH police chief insists that this case is still classified as a rescue and not a recovery. In my experience, they don’t dig for live people unless there’s a natural disaster or a building collapse.
The last time Harmony Montgomery was seen was late 2019. Harmony is partially blind in her right eye and wore glasses. She has blond hair and blue eyes and is thought be around 50 lbs and 4 feet tall.
Harmony was last in school in 2019 in Massachusetts. The home were she lived at 77 Gilford Street in Manchester was sold in 2020 but was recently searched on January 2nd , 2022 by police. No current details of items recovered were release. That search of the home was reopened on over the next weekend of January 8 with heavy equipment including ground warming equipment was brought in. That search concluded with no details of any findings. Information developed later indicated the timeline of Harmony going missing would be between November 29th-Dec 10th, 2019 after the family were already evicted from the home.
Family members have indicated that Harmony was most recently in the custody of her father, Adam Montgomery but that he is not in touch with much of the family due to a falling out. I will say Adam has an extensive criminal record including charges of shooting another person in the face while buying heroin in 2014, as well as other charges dating back further including assualt, stalking and breaking and entering. Somehow, records indicate he was still given custody of Harmony from DCYF while her brother Jamison was separated from her and adopted.
Investigation is occurring as to whether whether appropriate checks were made after she returned to her father’s care in February of 2019 but it doesn’t seem likely as Harmony’s mother and grandfather report that they called DCYF more than 14 times and yet DCYF can’t verify seeing the child since 2019? Seems rather Sus…
Montgomery and Harmony’s mother, Crys Renee Sorey are no longer together, and she lives in Tampa, FL. She says she has reported been working on visitation but no contact was ever able to be made. Montgomery himself reportedly states that he dropped the child with her mother over a year ago and has not seen her since. He is separated from his new wife, Kayla, after stalking and domestic violence issues and seemed to be homeless, arrested sleeping in his car with his new girlfriend, Kelsey Small.
Former neighbors of Adam Montgomery have reported that he had been evicted last year from the home where he lived with his wife two sons and newborn baby. The neighbors report that they never saw Harmony and report that Adam did mention that her, and that her mother would not let him see her.
On January 6th, 2022 – 2 arrests were made in connection to Harmony’s disappearance. Not surprisingly, the arrests were her father Adam Montgomery and his wife Kayla Montgomery – who is not Harmony’s mother and is estranged from Adam.
Adam is charged on a 2019 warrant for second degree assault against Harmony (where he allegedly gave the child a black eye) and two misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child and one misdemeanor charge interfering with custody of Harmony. His next disposition conference is listed as scheduled for 03/04/2022.
Kayla Montgomery faces welfare fraud charges for collecting benefits for Harmony when she was not in the custody of the Montgomerys. Her next Dispoitional conference is set for 2/25/22. Kayla appealed for a lower bail but it continues to be set at $5,000 and she remains in custody.
I don’t expect Kayla Montgomery, as the estranged wife will go down with the ship if she has anything incriminating on Adam after all of the issues with stalking and domestic violence that she allegedly faced after their split. The added motivation of the charges she is facing being reduced will also be a good bargaining chip for police. Where there are two parties involved that have already had a volatile split that more information has not already come out.
Manchester police are accepting tips at 603-203-6060. The police and local business executives are offering rewards totaling $100,000.00 for information that leads to her recovery.
This case is a another local case, taking place not far from where I live but it’s not technically a murder because Jennifer disappeared into thin air on November 14th, 1989 and was just never seen again. This case is from the City of Brockton, where there is more distrust of the police than in some of the suburbs but it’s clear that a lot of someone’s know something in this case. It’s just waiting for that one piece of information that brings everything together.
While I had heard the case before, likely from some of the vigils that have been held, what it leading me today to want to share today is a podcast I listened to called, “The Vanished”. If you have not listened to the podcast before – I invite you to give it a listen, and hear Jennifer’s Story.
Hopefully, this case will be solved. For myself, I am particularly interested in whether the abuse of the disabled person in this story was part of the reason that Jennifer disappeared. It was an aspect of the case I had never heard before and it could certainly speak to a motive.
Celina Cass was born January 2, 2000. She was tall for her age at 5’5 and weighed just around 92 lbs. Some of her classmates noted she was almost as tall as the teachers which hit my heart a little because I have a little sister that was the same way at her age.
At 11 years old, Celina had just finished the fourth grade. She was looking forward to entering the fifth grade at West Stewartstown Elementary School. Her favorite colors were pink and purple. She enjoyed dancing, swimming and arts and crafts. She played basketball and enjoyed spending time with her friends.
Celina’s crooked tooth smile made her face unforgettable to the people who followed the case. According to an article quoting Marcia Laro, her paternal grandmother, this malformation was due to an accident while fooling around with friends a few years before, and she was that very week scheduled to have braces that would have corrected her teeth.
The small New Hampshire town of West Stewartstown had population of between 380-900 inhabitants, depending on the source you trust, but in any case was so small that Celina’s class had just 10 fourth graders.
Celina lived an apartment house that had 4 apartments, that was one of the main streets through town, next to a restaurant and an old building that was once a school. The house was a large house described in many articles as, ”Ramshackle”, and in need of repair. This apartment was where she was last reported as seen by multiple sources.
Celina lived with her mother, Louisa Cass; Her stepfather, Wendell Noyes; His mother Eunice (who seemed to mainly just stay overnight) , An adult son of Louisa’s previous boyfriend, 22 year old Kevin Mullaney and her 13 year old sister Kayla. Louisa had been married to Wendell since October 2010, so only 9 months when Celina went missing but the couple had been dating for a couple of years. Pictures of this wedding are still visible as of the writing of this post if you find Wendell Noyes on Facebook. The family looks happy with no inclination of what’s to come.
Sources from the school reported that Celina had reported being uncomfortable or afraid around Wendell shortly after the marriage, but I saw nothing in these articles about any follow-up being done after these reports. Celina’s older sister reported that Wendell watched porn in the open at the home, and often referred to Celina as “Little Big Hoota”.
Celina’s father, Adam Laro, had been having severe health challenges including congestive health failure and was reportedly in a medically induced coma just before the incident and signed himself out against medical advice when he found out Celina was missing. He had not heard that Celina was having any problems in the home but I feel like it’s very possible she would not want to worry a sick parent or thought it would cause strife between Laro and her mother. It made me sad when he wondered out loud in interviews in the following months and years if there was anything he could have done or questions he could have asked that would have lead to revelations or somehow change what happened.
I saw several sources question why Kevin Mullaney, a 22 year old with felony convictions would have been living with the family. Mullaney publicly stated in articles that Louisa was like a mother to him, especially after his own mother passed away. Being that Louisa used to date Mullaney’s father, it is unclear how long that she had been in his life so it makes sense to me. In a world where relationships are short lived, I feel like there are a lot of people who connect with former partners of their parents. That said, I do see the concern with his less than stellar record then, and his future convictions since. One of the future convictions was fraud from trying to forge a check belonging to Louisa so I do wonder how she feels about him now.
The evening of July 25, 2011 was not a normal evening, even before Celina went missing. Her sister Kayla went to sleep at a friend’s house. This friend was 17 year old, Kaylin , who was said to be Kevin Mullaney’s girlfriend at the time. There was a car accident around 8:00 pm where a local resident hit a deer and briefly afterwards, Celina and her mother came outside to see the commotion. Neighbors, Jason Atwood and his girlfriend, Cassandra Hunt saw Celina at that time dressed in a pink shirt, denim shorts and flip flops. They reportedly returned home between 8:30 and 9:00 pm because it had started raining. The last reported sighting of Celina was at 9 pm that same night of July 25th, 2011 when her mother went to bed. Noyes reports several different stories of when he last saw her so I am going with Louisa’s version, where she hugged her daughter good night and said she loved her. Celina had been using the computer. This was verified by computer forensics that indicated that Celina was logged in IMVU, a social media site, from 09:05 pm until 10:28 pm. Kevin reportedly returned home around midnight but saw nothing out of the ordinary, made himself food and went to bed and left early the next morning for work.
Louisa testified that she got up around 2 am to use the bathroom. She stated that after she returned to bed, Wendell got up to use the bathroom but she does not remember him coming back to bed as she went back to sleep. Remember this, it’s important later. Louisa got up between 7:00-7:30 and left for work around 8 am.
Shortly after 8 am, Kayla returned home with Kaylin, and Wendell told her that Celina was missing. Kayla left and drove around the area with Kaylin but returned home after not locating Celina. Kayla noted that she realized that Wendell had not yet notified her mother, so she dialed the shop and handed Wendell the phone to make certain that her mother was aware. Louisa later reports that call came into her at around 9:00 am and she came directly home.
According to a friend of Wendell’s, Robert Wheeler, Wendell reported to him that Celina was missing at 7:40 am. This is where the inconsistencies start. This would have indicated that he was aware she was missing prior to Celina’s mother leaving for work and he never told her that Celina was missing at that time. A 9-1-1 call was placed by a neighbor, Deborah Whalen, when she heard Celina was missing and no one had yet notified the authorities, this call was placed at approximately 10:50 am, and first responders arrived at around quarter past 11. Another one of Wendell’s friends indicated an entire conversation that Wendell had with Kayla about getting Celina while they were speaking on the phone, and then Celina not being there when later it was discovered Kayla was not even home yet. She was still with Kaylin.
This missing person report triggered a massive search, including authorities who seemed to take the case seriously immediately. Investigators immediately noted that Celina’s bed was stripped to the egg crate covering and Kayla’s bed was made. There was insulation that was noted in photographs of the bedroom that was later matched through door in cellar near the bulkhead. This is believed to be how the body was taken out of the home.
Both Kayla and Louisa both noted that Wendell was doing laundry, which they both mentioned was strange as he never would have done that by routine. This would most certainly not be something someone would do after finding a child missing. One of Celina’s sheet were in this load of laundry.
Wendell Noyes changed his story several times about when he last saw Celina, how many beers he drank the night before and what time he got up during the night and the morning. During an interview with police, Noyes walked out of an interview when police tried to discuss the inconsistencies in his story. He was followed by the police who monitored him as he walked to the bridge and yelled as he gestured towards the dam where Celina was later found. In another instance he drove investigators in a circle around where Celina was later found when they asked him to show them areas where he thought they should search.
Three days after the disappearance, Wendell reported in an interview that the family was “grieving” as if he was already aware that she was gone. During a vigil, He reported folded her pictures down and while they were moved to the hotel for the investigation of the home, Wendell allegedly punch Celina’s picture 3 times in front of a witness. He denies these events. He also pretended to throw a grenade at the media. Louisa says in interviews that she grew suspicious of Noye’s involvement, and separated from him.
Celina’s body was found on August 1, 2011. She was submerged in 15 ft of water near the Canaan Hydrostation Dam and the railroad trestle about a half a mile from Celina’s apartment. According to the arrest affidavit, Celina’s body was wrapped in a Blue Comforter and a Plaid Blanket. There are pictures if you visit the link for the affidavit . There was twine wrapped around the exterior of the Blue comforter that was approximately 30 ft in length and wrapped around overlapping itself, and tied in knots. A rolled up Winnie the Pooh sheet was tucked between her legs along with a sandbag that weighed approximately 52 lbs. The sandbag was believed to be heavier but some contents had been spilled out. This sand was thought to have been intended to weigh the body down. Her cause of death was not immediately released but was later thought to be drowning. She was wearing only a t-shirt and a bra when she was found. Later interviews with police lead to the information that Louisa kept twine the same or similar to this twine for crafts and it was stored in Wendell’s toolbox. The sand bag between Celina’s legs when her body was found matched the other 3 sandbags from Wendell’s truck. Eunice had given these to Wendell and stated there had been 4. These bags weighed 70 lbs, they bag with Celina has lost some of it’s contents. Celina’s cause of death was drowning and her vaginal area had abrasions that indicated that could have indicated sexual penetration.
Wendell was hospitalized when her body was found after bizarre behavior including laying face down in the driveway. On August 4, 2011 Wendell Noyes checked himself into a mental health clinic. This was not the first time that he has sought help for mental health issues. In 2003, He was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and committed to a state psychiatric facility after breaking into a former girlfriend’s home and threatening to harm her. In that case, he was found incompetent to stand trial.
In 2013, the Cass’s apartment home went up in flames. No cause was released in the fire and the family had no longer lived there at the time of the fire.
In 2015, an inmate sharing a space near Mr Noyes indicated that Mr Noyes confessed to him that he had in fact, killed Celina because Noyes, and another unnamed man were having sex with her and thought that they might have gotten her pregnant. The inmate was confirmed to be in the space near Mr Noyes there was no way to corroborate the information, or the source, due to the fact these two were the only inmates in the immediate area.
Interesting side note, though possibly not directly related to this case, in 2019 Gordon Noyes – brother to Wendell Noyes, of Canaan, VT was convicted of repeated sexual assault of a child in his care resulting in felony sexual assault charges. He already had a longer criminal history and this conviction garnered him a 25 year sentence. After the case, two more victims came forward.
Two witnesses reported strange events the morning Celina went missing. At 2:07 am, a man going to work reported a vehicle backed up on the bridge near where Celina’s body was found. It was dark and he did not know the make of the vehicle. This is an exact time due to GPS installed in the vehicle. Additionally, a friend of Wendell’s reported exchanging a wave with him at 5:30 am when he saw him out.
June 20, 2016 Wendell Noyes was arrested and charged with the second degree murder of Celina.
As his defense, Mr Noyes asserted that Kevin Mullaney was the perpetrator. He indicated the evidence – a pair of pajama pants and a pair of Celina’s underwear as evidence along with Mr Mullaney’s less than stellar record. Several sources have pointed out that Mr Mullaney allowed the police to search his truck without a warrant and would have been very unlikely to do so if he was aware that these items of Celina’s would be found there. I did see several sources note that a pair of muddy, sandy & semen stained boxers of Mullaney’s were found in the basement area shared by the girls. I could find no official sources indicating this information and therefore am not able to say much about that except that it would have been easy for Wendell to move laundry Kevin left in the bathroom or his room and the police cleared Mullaney in this case after interviewing him extensively including polygraph testing. Important to note, Mullaney was no angel and is, at this time, an inmate in New Hampshire prison for several charges including the attempting to steal from Louisa.
Wendell Noyes is thought by most to have been solely responsible for Celina’s death but sadly due to the court finding in February 2017 that Mr Noyes not only incompetent to stand trial but that Mr. Noyes may never have the capacity to be competent to stand trial, the charges were dropped. This is extremely rare.
Murder charges could be reentered if Mr. Noyes is ever declared competent. He is admitted to New Hampshire Hospital and is committed for a minimum of 5 years. Hopefully, after 2 violent acts, that’s where he will remain.
